One of the new pass-catching combinations at Alabama this season will be Bryce Young to John Metchie.

Metchie has elevated his profile in the Crimson Tide offense since midway through last season when he began the year as the Tide’s No. 3 wideout and expanded his role following the injury to Jaylen Waddle. He averaged 16.7 yards per catch to rank seventh in the SEC and totaled 916 yards and six touchdowns on 55 catches. Metchie converted a first down or scored a touchdown on 35 of his receptions as a sophomore

On Monday, he discussed with reporters how new starting quarterback Bryce Young is adapting to taking over the job.

“Bryce (Young) has a good ability to extend plays with his feet, and it definitely helps the receivers get open and make more dynamic plays,” he said, per Charlie Potter.

At SEC Media Days, Metchie explained what he expects out of this season.

“Bryce has endless potential,” he said. “I’m excited to see him play. I think just working with him and knowing him as a friend, I’m really excited for him to get his shot. … I think he’s definitely coming along in a leadership role, definitely stepping up to it. I’m definitely excited for his opportunity, and he’s definitely doing a really good job of it.”

Alabama opens the season at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 4 against Miami in Atlanta.
