Alabama completely dominated Thursday night’s College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl.

Michigan State never stood a chance. Alabama was better in every facet of the game in its 38-0 victory. The Crimson Tide was impressive.

Let’s take a look at Alabama’s biggest strengths and weaknesses against Michigan State.

STRENGTHS

1. Jake Coker stepped up: Coker was great, finishing with 12-of-31 for 286 yards and two touchdowns against an imposing Michigan State defense. If he plays like that against Clemson, Alabama may be unstoppable.

2. Alabama’s defense was suffocating: Connor Cook, a highly touted NFL prospect, looked uncomfortable and out of place the entire night. It was clear that Kirby Smart didn’t want the game to be his last on the Alabama sidelines. He dialed up a perfect game plan as the Alabama defense pitched a shutout. Michigan State was held to 29 yards on 26 carries. Cook was forced into two interceptions, sacked twice and never stood a chance.

3. The Tide has playmakers across the board: Sure, Derrick Henry didn’t have a big night. But that’s OK. Nick Saban teams always have multiple playmakers. Receiver Calvin Ridley was outstanding with 138 yards and two touchdowns. Cyrus Jones had a 57-yard punt return for a TD. The Crimson Tide received contributions around the board.

WEAKNESSES

1. Henry was held in check: It’s really hard to point out any weaknesses. This was the most complete game Alabama has played all year. It was clear that Michigan State’s main focus was to contain Derrick Henry. The Heisman Trophy winner finished the night with just 75 yards rushing and two TDs, only the fourth time this season he’s had less than 100 yards rushing — two of the other three came in blowouts when didn’t get many carries.
