Earlier this month, Saivion Smith got a new NFL opportunity by signing with the Denver Broncos. However, it didn’t lead to the 23-year-old cornerback earning a roster spot.

On Tuesday, the Broncos announced that Smith was among the 22 players they waived to get their roster down to 53 players ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline. It’s possible that the former Alabama standout could end up on Denver’s practice squad, but for now, he faces some uncertainty.

After ending his college career by playing for the Crimson Tide in 2018, Smith went undrafted in 2019, then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he was waived before the start of that season.

Smith then played for the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks, recording 8 tackles in 2 games. The league then folded after getting shut down in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout 2020, Smith went back and forth between the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad and active roster. But he was waived this May, getting claimed by the Seattle Seahawks, who then waived him in July.

Smith, who had 3 tackles in 6 games for Dallas last season, showed what he’s capable of while at Alabama, as he had 60 tackles and 3 interceptions in 14 games for the Tide. Now, he’ll look to keep trying to find a way to get onto the field at the NFL level.
