Former Alabama defensive back Deionte Thompson has been released by the Arizona Cardinals, as the team announced Tuesday afternoon. The move was made to make way for the signing of linebacker Jesse Luketa from the Cardinals practice squad.

Thompson saw the majority of his time on the field on special teams and was the direct backup to starting safeties Buddy Baker and Jalen Thompson. Letting Thompson go is a bit of a curious move, considering the team only has two safeties and that the move gives them seven outside linebackers.

Don’t be surprised if the former fifth-rounder who has spent the past 4 seasons with the Cardinals ends up with the team on the practice squad and is eventually elevated to the active roster if he clears waivers.

Thompson finished out his Alabama career with 112 total tackles (69 solo), with 7 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions. It will be interesting to see what the next step of his career holds and if it with Arizona.
