Former Alabama defensive lineman Isaiah Hastings verbally committed to transfer to Mizzou last week, but his plans have changed.

Hastings posted on Monday that he has decommitted from the Tigers. He thanked the Mizzou coaching staff for recruiting him, specifically head coach Eli Drinkwitz and defensive line coach Kevin Peoples.

“After careful consideration I’ll be decommiting from The University of Missouri. Thank you to Coach Drinkwitz and Coach Peoples for recruiting me and the whole Mizzou staff,” Hastings wrote.

About 35 minutes later, Hastings announced a transfer commitment to Syracuse. Mizzou and Syracuse were both named in last week’s final four, along with Illinois and Cal.

Last season, Hastings made his 2022 debut against ULM, logging his first tackle. Hastings is not currently listed on the 2023 Alabama roster. An accessible bio page lists him at 6-4, 290 pounds with a note that he did not see action in the 2023 season. He has three seasons of remaining eligibility.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Hastings prepped at Clearwater (Florida) Academy International. As a prospect, he was rated 4-stars, the No. 26 player in the state of Florida, No. 29 defensive lineman and No. 219 recruit overall in the Class of 2022 on the 247Sports Composite.

Hastings picked up scholarship offers from 30 programs during his initial recruitment. He signed with Alabama over interest from Mizzou, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and others.

Fran Brown pulls SEC talent from the transfer portal

Like many first-year coaches, Fran Brown is turning to the transfer portal to help build his 2024 roster. Brown, a former Georgia assistant, was hired as Syracuse’s new head coach in late November.

Brown takes over a Syracuse team that went 6-7 in the 2023 season. Hastings gives the Orange 11 incoming transfers after seeing 17 players hit the portal. Brown’s initial portal haul includes six former SEC players, as well as Ohio State transfer QB Kyle McCord.
