Gary Danielson tried to dissect the play as Alabama’s safety against Texas A&M in the end zone unfolded late in the 4th quarter at Kyle Field.

The referee explained that it was intentional grounding in the end zone and therefore a safety against Max Johnson.

“Oh, he threw it, but was he in the grasp when he let the ball go. His knee was down I think or they called holding in the end zone? Is that what they called?,” Danielson said on the “SEC on CBS” broadcast. “Either way, it was either intentional grounding or holding, or his knee was down. I think it was called intentional grounding as he let the ball go.”

The play on 2nd and 19 led to Alabama building a 26-17 with 5:55 remaining.

Rules analyst Gene Steratore agreed with the call on the field.

For his part, Brad Nessler on the call admitted he called safety first and touchdown second.
