Kirby Smart was doing some big-game hunting ahead of Wednesday’s Early Signing Period launch. The Bulldogs tried to get 5-star QB Bryce Young on UGA campus before signing day.

The tidbit was revealed in a feature on Young by Andrew Bone for Bama Insider:

Young confirmed USC was the biggest competition to Alabama which comes as no surprise. He mentioned other schools did its best to try and get Bryce on campus for an official visit. One school in particular, Georgia, asked the Youngs to come in for an official visit the weekend prior to signing day. Georgia mentioned keeping the visit quiet. The Young family decided it was best not to take even a ‘quiet’ visit to Athens. “Nothing is quiet in recruiting,” his father said.

Young signed with Alabama on Wednesday. The Mater Dei signal-caller is rated the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and No. 6 prospect overall nationally in the 2020 recruiting class on the 247Sports Composite. The Elite 11 QB has accepted an invitation to the All-American Bowl all-star game.

Georgia signed 4-star QB Carson Beck. The Mandarin quarterback out of Jacksonville, Florida is rated the No. 8 pro-style quarterback, No. 32 Florida product and No. 204 prospect overall. UGA fans and rival fans may try to read between the lines with the news of the attempted Young flip, but it’s certainly not surprising to see the Bulldogs staff attempt to sign two QBs with so much uncertainty on the depth chart.

Bone’s feature, which looks at everything that went into Young signing with the Crimson Tide, is a worthwhile read for UA fans.
