Greg Byrne appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show this week to discuss a number of topics related to the recent changes at Alabama.

Byrne has been busy for the last week or so with Nick Saban deciding to retire and the ensuing coaching search. Alabama quickly ran a thorough search and ended up hiring Washington’s Kalen DeBoer for the head coaching job.

However, bringing in DeBoer has not solved Alabama’s issue with the transfer portal. The Tide have lost multiple starters to the portal this week, most recently safety Caleb Downs and offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor. On Wednesday, Finebaum asked Byrne to address Alabama’s growing roster problem.

Byrne pointed to Alabama’s ongoing NIL efforts as a way to help combat the issue.

“NIL is part of it,” Byrne said. “We’ve tried to be progressive with our NIL approach. It’s a reality. I’m wearing my ‘Yea Alabama’ pullover right now, which we’ve had almost 1,000 new members just since we’ve announced coach DeBoer. We’ve got to continue to get new people to sign up and be a part of it because it’s a reality of the world we’re facing. And coach Saban did such a great job of continuing to adapt to what the realities of the world are. We’re going to continue the same thing.

“If a young man goes into the transfer portal, we try to be very transparent with them and talk with them through that and be strategic with them. And at the same time too, we certainly won’t fault somebody if they’re interested in it, but we’re also very confident, we think this is the best place in the country, by far, for anybody to go to school.”

Here are Byrne’s full comments on the matter:

All Alabama players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal because of the coaching change.

There will be another window for all college football players to enter the portal in the spring. At that point, DeBoer and his staff could be more aggressive in acquiring talent for the 2024 season.
