Greg McElroy is underwhelmed so far by Tommy Rees in his first season as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

During the Always College Football show, the ESPN analyst cites a particular play that frustrated him during Alabama’s 24-10 victory vs. Ole Miss.

“You’re on the goal line. You just block a punt…Your center by the way has had 4 bad snaps this year, maybe more. Well, airmails it over the quarterback’s head. Takes a huge loss…” McElroy said. “If you just go under center, T-formation, I don’t care. QB sneak, I don’t care. Do the Jalen Hurts…Push, push that quarterback across the goal line.”

McElroy is adamant that the 31-year-old Rees needs to go more conventional in these circumstances.

“What’s the worst that can happen? Can you fumble a snap under center? Of course you can. But I’m so fed up with the shotgun plays on the 1-yard line. I am over that,” McElroy said. “Unless all you do in your offense is shotgun and your center has never snapped under center in his life, I want you under center at the goal line.”

Alabama hasn’t exceeded 24 points in any of its last 3 games. Rees took over the position after working at his alma mater Notre Dame first as a quarterbacks coach (2017-19) and then as offensive coordinator (2020-22).

Rees and No. 12 Alabama will strive for a better offensive performance when they head into a hostile environment at Mississippi State in Week 5.
