Greg McElroy describes Alabama as ‘way too quarterback-driven’
Greg McElroy thinks Alabama has a quarterback problem of sorts, saying recently that he believes the Crimson Tide are “way too quarterback driven.”
That’s a point he recently drove home in his appearance on his show, Always College Football.
“That has been trending in this direction, and we had talked a little bit about this last week, saying the thing that scares you most about Alabama is that if Jalen Milroe is on, they are so, so tough to play against,” McElroy said. “But when he is not on, and there have been multiple games this year where he hasn’t been… it’s a problem.”

Regardless of what exactly Alabama’s issue is, there is no question that there is something seriously different between that team and the one Nick Saban was at the helm of. The Crimson Tide have certainly had their highs and lows at the start of the Kalen DeBoer era, peaking at No. 1 in the country.
But the team has also had its fair share of valleys in the process, reaching a certain type of low when they were blow out at Oklahoma, 24-3 in a game that made some very real problems in the way things could look for the Crimson Tide where the College Football Playoff is concerned.
Quarterback Jalen Milroe looked suspect, completing 11 of his 26 passing attempts for 164 yards with 3 interceptions.
It will be interesting to see how things play out with Alabama and Auburn set to kick off at 3:30 p.m ET in Tuscaloosa for what will be one Iron Bowl to remember.
I think Greg’s comment could apply to almost every team in today’s game. Bama may be (like LSU) too dependent on their starter. Teams like Texas, with two very capable (even elite) QB’s have a huge advantage.
Bama has a very capable backup in Simpson. I think Milroe is more selfish and this is the problem and trying to do it all himself, instead of getting his team involved around him.
I’ve been saying that all season but have been told to shut up and that I’m an idiot by Bama fans. Milroe leads the team in rushing. When did that ever happen under Saban? Bama’s strength has always been balance. Very strong run game with 3+ backs and having 3-5 of the top WRs in all of college football. You can get away with having a mediocre QB if you have those things. AJ McCarron is a prime example. Bama needs to be glad that Milroe is leaving this year because his play style would be detrimental to your RB room.
Agree 100%. He has more carries than any running back. I think he’s selfish looking for too much personal glory. Coaches lack guts to correct situation.
ESPN ranks all QBs weekly – Milroe was at the absolute BOTTOM of SEC with a QBR of 15.4 ……yes 15.4 that was even worse than the 48 he got in last years CFP playoff game …… who knows WHAT you are going to get from this guy? He ALONE tried to give away the So Carolina game this year
I’m so old I can remember when we were going to give Milroe the Heisman.
How’s that working out?
It’s been a long time since I’ve felt the need to comment anything, but Milroe is genuinely the heart of the problem of this Alabama team. It’s clear he has an attitude problem, and as a player, he’s a mediocre passer at best and a pretty good runner when he needs to be. He has practically zero pocket awareness, which really is interesting considering his dual-threat label. He will overthrow even the most wide open receivers. His leadership inspires as little confidence as his actual play-making ability. Deboer needs to nut up and open the QB room wide open next year as I’m assuming Milroe will not be scampering his way to the NFL after this paltry season of his. There is far too much quarterback talent on this team to be trotting the king of inconsistency out every game hoping you just get the right version of him playing that day.
