Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic had Kirk Bohls, a long-time Texas sportswriter who covers the Longhorns for the Austin American-Statesman, on their WJOX show, “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” to preview the Texas-Alabama game this week.

“The big thing for Texas I continue to feel like is going to be continuing to create big plays,” McElroy said, even with the inefficiencies running the ball. “The big-play potential still remains. … I think when you look at the possibility of being able to break it open, it still exists. Are you concerned about their ability to create big plays, because that, I think, is a recipe to a potential upset this weekend?”

Bohls believes the wide receiver group, “is as good as they’ve had. I feel like the best wide receiver groups in the nation may be Texas and A&M and Ohio State. Heck, I guess we’ve got to include Colorado in that now.”

Xavier Worthy last week had 7 catches, on 10 targets, for 90 yards and Jordan Whittington had 4 catches for 47 yards.

“You’re right, Greg, they’ve got to create more balance and more rushing lanes and those weren’t there and haven’t been there consistently,” Bohls said. “The defense kind of won both scrimmages in August, guys, and it looks like that’s going to be the strength of the team, at least in September. And Quinn Ewers has not hit the deep ball, you’re right about the explosive plays, you know Sark, he loves to stretch the field, and that was a problem last year. Quinn was not accurate on the deep ball. On Saturday against Rice, he was 0-for-7 on passes of 20 yards or more.”

McElroy said Ewers throws many passes off of his back foot and has a sidearm release often. And that makes it difficult to be consistent. Bohls relayed that Steve Sarkisian believes Texas needs the threat of the deep ball, and Bohls agrees.

“But if it’s not working, how much of a threat is it,” he said. “Even though you’ve got (one of) the most talented receivers in the world, he’s not hitting them in stride, he’s either under throwing or over throwing. Puts too much air into it and quite frankly guys, of the 3 quarterbacks they have, he has the weakest arm of the 3.”
