As we’re a week away from the College Football Playoff selection show, there’s still plenty to sort out for the top 4 spots. One major argument appears to be Texas against Alabama since the Longhorns knocked off the Crimson Tide in September.

“If Alabama beats Georgia and wins the SEC, it just means more headaches for the selection committee,” ESPN reporter Heather Dinich said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” “That would be the ultimate nightmare scenario because assuming undefeated Michigan wins, they’re in. Undefeated Florida State wins, they’re in. Make it trickier: undefeated Washington, they’re in. So, who gets this last spot? The selection committee would line up 1-loss Texas if they win, 1-loss Georgia, and 1-loss SEC champ Alabama for that 4th spot.”

That’s when the fine print of the tie-breaking scenarios come in.

“That would be extremely difficult but … a conference championship matters,” she said. “Strength of schedule. Head-to-head competition, and results against common opponents. None of those are weighted in the committee room meeting so what means as much to you might not mean as much to me.”
