It was a rough start to the Maryland career for Alabama transfer Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Tua.

Maryland lost 43-3 to Northwestern as Tagovailoa made his first start. He was 14 of 25 passing for 94 yards and three interceptions.

Tagovailoa earned the starting nod for the Terps, and he initially made the decision stand up early in the game. He led a solid opening drive, that ended with a field goal. Maryland finished with 207 offensive yards, and 56 of those came when Tagovailoa completed 6 of 7 passes on the first drive. That was his first chance as a starter after he came from Alabama where Tagovailoa had attempted just 12 passes as a backup.

“First drive, I felt very comfortable and confident,” Tagovailoa said, per 247Sports. “After the first pick, that was a mistake we try to shake it off. After that it was me. I take full ownership of that and we’ve just got to get better. I feel like I made a lot of mistakes that cost us the game, but at least it’s early in the season.”

Maryland coach Mike Locksley chalked it up to inexperience.

“He had opportunities to execute and I thought the first drive, he did a good job,” Locksley said. “Obviously, this is still his first career start in college, and so he made some mistakes. He threw the ball into double coverage, maybe threw the ball down the field on a short situation where we’d like him to take a higher-percentage throw and make a better decision there. But, you know, for the most part, I thought that he didn’t show signs of being uncomfortable.”
