There are many ways to illustrate Alabama’s dominance in college football in recent years, not the least of which being the national championships – four during Nick Saban’s decade of dominance.

But perhaps the biggest way is examining how they have completely dominated the toughest conference in the FBS – the SEC.

Over the past five seasons, no team in the entire FBS has ruled its conference the way Alabama has in the SEC. Here are some of the numbers to defend that position:

The Record

Alabama is 36-4 in SEC play over the past five seasons. Among teams in Power 5 conferences, only Ohio State has a better conference record since 2012 (39-2). However, it’s important to look at the level of competition the Buckeyes have gone up against in the Big Ten, compared to that of the Crimson Tide.

Example: It can be argued that over the past five seasons, the next best program in the Big Ten has been Michigan State (last season’s 3-9 record notwithstanding). The Spartans have won two of the past four Big Ten championships, and are the only other Big Ten team outside of the Buckeyes to make it to the College Football Playoff.

That came in 2015, when the Spartans came into the CFP with a 12-1 record. Their opponent in the national semifinal game that year: Alabama.

Final score: Alabama 38, Michigan State 0.

Also, Ohio State has faced just seven Big Ten teams ranked in the top 15 at the time of the game (and lost twice). Alabama has played 19 such SEC opponents, going 15-4.

By the way, the four SEC losses for the Crimson Tide since 2012 have each come by six or fewer points.

Here’s a look at the Power 5 leaders over the past five seasons:

Conference Championships

Alabama has won four of the past five SEC championships. No other Power 5 team has won as many conference championships over this span (three teams have won three: Florida State in the ACC, Oklahoma in the Big 12 and Stanford in the Pac-12).

The Crimson Tide are 4-0 in SEC Championship Games since 2012, with the past three wins coming by 29, 14 and 38 points.

Scoring Margin

Over the past five seasons, Alabama has outscored its SEC opponents by an average margin of 20.3 PPG, greater than any other Power 5 team in their respective conference. (Ohio State is the next closest in scoring margin: +19.8 PPG)

Perhaps even more impressive: The next closest SEC team in scoring margin during conference games is Georgia, at +6.9 PPG. In fact, over the past five seasons only four SEC teams have a positive scoring margin in conference games: Georgia, Florida, LSU and Texas A&M.

Those four SEC schools have a combined scoring margin of +19.6 PPG — still less than Alabama’s.

Total YPG Margin

In conference games over the past five seasons, Alabama has outgained its opponents by an average margin of 161.1 yards per game, more than twice as many as the next closest SEC team (Georgia: +70.4 YPG).

Among Power 5 teams, only Clemson has a higher YPG margin in conference games: +166.2. However, that number was greatly inflated from the Tigers dominance of the ACC over the past two seasons (+222.7 YPG).

Across the board, not only has Alabama dominated its conference like no other SEC team, but also like no other Power 5 team in any conference.
