Jim McElwain’s son, Jerret McElwain, is expected to join the Alabama staff of new head coach Kalen DeBoer.

That report comes from Football Scoop’s John Brice who reports the younger McElwain, the son of the former Florida head coach and a previous Tide offensive coordinator, is expected to follow DeBoer from Washington. McElwain is, in fact, an Alabama alum who began his work in football personnel and recruiting during his undergrad days in Tuscaloosa.

Heading into 2022, DeBoer grabbed McElwain to join his staff at Washington after a prolonged stretch for McElwain at Michigan. He is credited with playing a key role during a prominent stretch of recruiting success for Jim Harbaugh’s program.

Per Brice, McElwain and personnel expert Courtney Morgan were regarded as the “primary cogs” to Washington’s personnel operations during DeBoer’s two seasons with the program. Now, he’ll get a chance to return to Tuscaloosa to help shape the program in the post-Nick Saban era.

The addition of an Alabama alum to DeBoer’s off-field staff, particularly in the world of recruiting efforts, would be an obvious win for the head coach. While he has a track record of winning everywhere he has coached, DeBoer has a notable lack of experience in the southeast. The inclusion of McElwain should be the first piece to help assuage some of those concerns.
