Alabama is ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll, so it can’t go any higher. But the Crimson Tide can widen the gap between them and the rest of the top programs in the country.

Joel Klatt of FOX Sports thinks there’s a few thing that separates Alabama from those other strong schools, and he broke it down in a clip he shared on Twitter earlier this week.

“Folks, you come in with expectations, you’re the best team in the country, you’re the defending national champions, you lose everybody and then they come out and what did they look like? Alabama,” Klatt said. “All right, kudos to that program and Nick Saban. Because they understand what a sense of urgency is. Some of these other teams don’t, right? But guess what, Alabama understands what it means to be great.

“You know what it means to be great? To have a sense of urgency and an expectation that is not held externally but internally. Their expectations for themselves — I guarantee you practice is harder for the Tide than it is for the games. All right, Miami didn’t really have a chance. And that’s one of those things where everybody’s like, ‘What’s Miami going to do?’ They played Alabama, what do you want Miami to do?”

Klatt agrees with mostly everybody that Alabama should be ranked No. 1 and Georgia is No. 2 at this point in the season. But if the Crimson Tide keep playing the way they did in Week 1, they may have a hold on that top spot for quite some time, as they were impressive in their 44-13 win over Miami.

Now, Alabama will most likely be improving to 2-0 when it hosts Mercer for its home opener on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
