Joel Klatt was a big fan of heavyweight showdown that happened in New Orleans on Tuesday’s version of The Joel Klatt Show.

Texas and Washington met in the Caesars Superdome as the game ended 37-31 in favor of the Huskies. Quinn Ewers and Michael Penix Jr. didn’t disappoint with both lighting up the scoreboard for their respective teams.

While the game was a great watch, Klatt ultimately felt bad for Washington running back Dillon Johnson. As the Huskies were driving down the field trying to run the clock out, Johnson suffered an injury and forced Washington to use a timeout. This gave Texas a lot more time on its final drive than anticipated.

“How about that Sugar Bowl? I know it doesn’t quite feel like the overtime thriller, but that got really good late. … The game’s basically over and Washington’s trying to run out the clock and I feel terrible for Dillon Johnson. … He goes down late in that game, Washington had to take a timeout,” said Klatt. “Texas was gonna have like 15 seconds left. Because of the injury and the timeout, they’ve gotta give it to them with 45 seconds left. Then they get the penalty and the long pass and it’s like, ‘Oh my goodness. Is Texas actually gonna win this game?'”

Klatt then spoke to the meltdown of Texas and Quinn Ewers in the red zone in the final moments. Klatt also imposed some QB wisdom after his days of playing for Colorado in early 2000s.

“Then, you get to the last sequence and Texas just falls apart completely on the last few plays,” said Klatt. “One, you cannot throw a swing route on 1st down with 15 seconds left. Second down, he basically threw it out of the back of the end zone. Third down, he feels pressure and gets it off to live another day. On 4th down, he throws it out of the end zone again. Word to the wise quarterbacks, 100% of the passes you throw out of bounds are gonna be incomplete.”

Penix impressed Klatt the most and it became clear to the broadcaster that not a lot of people had been watching the Washington QB.

“The more important part of the game is that Michael Penix is that dude at quarterback. That guy is really good,” said Klatt. “I’m really happy for him that he went out there and played for the way that he has for the last 2 seasons and in a lot of ways was his sort of introduction to a lot of people around the country. It’s abundantly clear to me that they are a lot of people that didn’t watch this guy play.”

The Huskies are moving on and will play Michigan for the national title on Monday.
