Josh Primo was waived by the San Antonio Spurs Friday in a roster move that shocked the NBA world.

The announcement from the Spurs did not explain why the No. 12 pick was being let go. Later Friday, Primo released a statement to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, saying he is stepping away for mental health purposes:

“I know that you all are surprised by today’s announcement. I’ve been seeking help to deal with previous trauma I suffered and will now take this time to focus on my mental health treatment more fully. I hope to be able to discuss these issues in the future so I can help others who have suffered in a similar way. I appreciate privacy at this time.”

Earlier this month, the Spurs exercised the 3rd year of Primo’s contract for the 2023-24 season.

This season, Primo was averaging 7 points per game with 3.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He last played on Monday in San Antonio’s 115-106 win at Minnesota, scoring 10 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
