Kane Wommack has resigned as South Alabama’s head coach, the next step in what is expected to be a move to Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama staff.

Jaguars AD Joel Erdmann confirmed Wommack’s decision Tuesday morning in a press release. Wommack had been leading the program for 3 seasons and also spent time as the DC during a previous stint.

“I deeply appreciate Kane’s service to our program, university and city,” said Erdmann. “His efforts propelled us forward and we wish him and Melissa the very best.”

It has already been reported that Wommack is expected to be hired as Alabama’s new defensive coordinator under DeBoer. Wommack and DeBoer spent time together on Tom Allen’s Indiana staff, and the move would be a major one for Alabama’s new head coach.

Wommack would check a lot of boxes for the Crimson Tide, including strong ties to the region. He has previous DC stints at Eastern Illinois (2014-15), South Alabama (2016-17) and Indiana (2019-20), and Wommack’s head coaching record is a plus.

While leading South Alabama, the Jaguars went 22-16 overall with a pair of bowl appearances. Wommack also delivered the program’s first 10-win season at the FBS level and first-ever bowl win following the 2023 season.
