Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is one of the best in the business. He’s been running Alabama’s defense for eight seasons now, and every year people speculate whether he’ll jump at a head coaching opportunity.

According to a report from AL.com, Smart isn’t going to just take any job.

Smart told AL.com’s Michael Casagrande that he is waiting for the “right job,” although he’s not sure what or when that will be. Smart’s interest in becoming a head coach is “always” present, but he’s taking his time in making any move.

“I don’t know what that is,” Smart said of what the right job would be. “That’s a hard question. I just want to beat Ohio State right now and worry about the rest later.”

At Alabama, Smart is well compensated for his excellent services. He was the second-highest paid assistant in the country in 2014, with a $1.36 million salary, per USA Today’s coaches salary database. He’s been a rumored candidate at several high-profile jobs during his tenure at Alabama, but hasn’t gone past the interviewing stages with any of them.

Smart’s revelations are nothing new, as he’s made similar statements in the past, but Alabama’s coordinators don’t speak to the media during the season. With only a small number of head coaching vacancies remaining around the country, it doesn’t appear this will be the year Smart leaves Tuscaloosa.
