Jameson Williams was suspended last week by the NFL for violating the league’s gambling policies. The former Alabama wide receiver was among 5 players suspended, and he received a 6-game punishment.

The Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes admitted that Williams is young, but is aware of what he did.

“He made a mistake,” Holmes said. “He takes accountability of it. He knows it. He is young. He understands the mistake he’s made. We’ve had transparent, open conversations about it. But we have confidence that he’s going to take the right approach, he’s going to have the right response in terms of what he needs to do.”

Williams was the 12th overall pick in last year’s draft, but he played in just 6 games after he returned from knee surgery.

Williams did not bet on NFL games, but he placed bets on college football from the team’s facility. That’s why his suspension was for less time than former teammates C.J. Moore and Quintez Cephus, who were both released after being banned for at least a season.
