Earlier this week, Danny Kanell ruffled some feathers when he tweeted that Alabama, despite its season-long dominance, should be eliminated from College Football Playoff contention with a loss to Georgia in Saturday’s SEC championship game.

During his “Off the Bench” show Thursday, Kanell broke down his reasoning in greater detail, which you can see in the tweet below.

Kanell’s main argument is that the top-ranked Crimson Tide should be treated the same as the other Power 5 CFP contenders, which will likely miss out if they lose their respective conference title games. Never mind that Alabama is facing No. 4 Georgia while Clemson plays five-loss Pittsburgh, Ohio State takes on four-loss Northwestern and Oklahoma has a date with three-loss Texas.

Still, Kanell believes Nick Saban’s squad “should be sent home packing just like everybody else” if it loses this weekend.

Another point he stressed is that both Alabama and Georgia reaching the CFP would devalue other conference championship games because the presumed inclusion of undefeated Notre Dame means only one other Power 5 champion will be in the final four.

“If they do get in and there are two SEC teams, I think it will really expose the current system and the flaws that are in it because every year you’re going to leave out one, no matter what,” Kanell said. “Last year, you left out two Power 5 conference champions, and this year, you would leave out three? If that’s the case, you might as well rename it the ‘Bama Invitational’ because that’s all it’s becoming.”

Kanell did acknowledge that the top-ranked Crimson Tide are a great team and that he expects Alabama to win “comfortably” this weekend. But that’s apparently not enough to sway him that Alabama belongs in the CFP even with a loss this weekend.
