After playing at Alabama, Starr was selected by the Packers in the 1956 NFL draft. He went on to play his entire pro career for Green Bay from 1956-71, and he later served as its head coach from 1975-83.
Starr helped the Packers win Super Bowl I and II, winning the MVP award in both games, and he was a five-time NFL champion. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977, and he’s also been inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. Also, his No. 15 has been retired by Green Bay.
This season’s helmet decal is a nice way for the Packers to honor one of their all-time greats in Starr, who died at the age of 85 due to a period of failing health after he had suffered a stroke in 2014.
Starr has been remembered by the Crimson Tide as well, as head coach Nick Saban and athletic director Greg Byrne both issued statements after Starr’s death earlier this year.
