The National Football League’s deadline for teams to get down to 75 players was 4 p.m. (ET) today, and with most moves having already been announced the vast majority of former University of Alabama players survived the initial cut.

The exceptions were offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell, linebacker Jerrell Harris and cornerback Deion Belue (injuried), while offensive lineman Mike Johnson will miss his second straight season with the Atlanta Falcons after being placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury.

The final cuts down to 53 players will be made Saturday, after every team plays its final game of the preseason (all times ET):

Detroit at Buffalo, 7 p.m.
Indianapolis at Cincinnati, 7 p.m.
New York Jets at Philadelphia, 7 p.m., NFL Network
St. Louis at Miami, 7 p.m.
Kansas City at Green Bay, 7 p.m.
Carolina at Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m.

Alabama has 44 active players in various training camps, although Barrett Jones (back), AJ McCarron and Terrence Cody could all end up on injury/physically unable to perform lists.

There are two groups of players to especially keep an eye on at this point, the players who signed as free agents, and those just off their initial contracts.

The first group includes guard Anthony Steen in Arizona and linebacker Adrian Hubbard in Green Bay. All of the other undrafted rookies have already been sent packing.

As for the latter, consider Alabama’s draft players from 2009-10:

2009
1, 6, Andre Smith Bengals, T, signed a 3-year $18 million contract
3, 74, Glen Coffee 49ers RB, retired
3, 77, Antoine Caldwell, Texans, C, out of football last year, recently released by the Jagaurs
3, 95 Rashad Johnson, Cardinals, S, signed 3-year $3.60 million contract

2010
Round, Pick, Name, Team, Pos., Status
1 8, Rolando McClain, Raiders, LB, attempting comebacker with Cowboys
1, 20, Kareem Jackson, Texans, DB, due to make $3 million in last year of initial 5-year contract
2, 50, Javier Arenas, Chiefs, DB, has 1-year $795,00 contract with Falcons
2, 57, Terrence Cody, Ravens, DT, has 1-year, $730,000 contract
3, 98, Mike Johnson, Falcons, G, has 1-year, $675,000 contract
7, 211, Marquis Johnson, Rams, DB, out of NFL
7, 247, Brandon Deaderick, Patriots, LB, has 1-year, $730,000 contract with Jaguars

Nevertheless, to give an idea of what’s at stake, consider the contracts that this year’s drafted players signed (all for four years):

C.J. Mosley, first, $8.78 million
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, first, $8.33
Cyrus Kouandjio, second, $4.81
Kevin Norwood, fourth, $2.64
Ed Stinson, fifth, $2.41
AJ McCarron, fifth, $2.40
Vinnie Sunseri, fifth, $2.40
Jeoffrey Pagan, sixth, $2.35
