Malachi Moore and the Alabama defense are out to improve on the number of penalties that are called against the Crimson Tide.

Alabama was 13th in the SEC last season in penalties, with 7.9 per game that equaled 68.7 yards per game. Alabama totaled 893 yards of penalties. That also put Alabama at 123rd in the country, or 9th-worst. Moore told reporters Monday that new Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is assigning players 10 up-downs for a penalty in practice, then 10 up-downs for every flag against the position group after that.

“It keeps guys conscious of not making mental mistake or mistakes that will put us back,” Moore said.

Moore also noted that Steele is “doing a great job of bringing back the Alabama mindset.”

Steele himself addressed the issue with the media on Sunday.

“There are repercussions for your actions, and it stays in front of you,” Steele said. “In most cases in life, if you keep something that you need to correct in front of you continuously, most people learn.”
