Markail Benton’s disappearance from the Alabama online roster makes much more sense now.

If you missed it, Benton was not originally on Alabama’s updated 2020 online roster once it was published but was quickly added on to the online directory once his absence was noted by media members.

While many chalked that up to a simple oversight by Alabama, after a few days, Benton was removed from the list. Now we may know why that back and forth occurred.

During a Thursday teleconference, Nick Saban announced the junior linebacker has been suspended from the team.

“That hasn’t really changed,” Saban said when asked about the Alabama defender.

Benton is scheduled to be a redshirt junior next season after appearing in nine games last season for the Crimson Tide. He had 19 tackles, including one tackle for loss and one pass breakup last fall for Alabama. For his career, Benton has 33 tackles in two seasons on the field for Alabama.

The Phenix City, Ala., native signed with the Crimson Tide as a member of the 2017 recruiting cycle. He was rated as a four-star prospect and a top 200 overall prospect by 247Sports Composite Rankings. Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley, now both coaching at Tennessee, were Benton’s primary recruiters for Alabama.
