Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide will once again be expected to compete for the SEC title after winning both the SEC regular season and tournament titles last year.
Helping the Tide’s cause will be sharpshooter Jaden Shackelford, who returns to Tuscaloosa after exploring both his NBA Draft and transfer portal options this offseason.
On Wednesday, Oats discussed re-recruiting Shackelford to keep him in crimson for one more year (via AL.com):
“Jaden put his name in the portal just to look at some other options,” Oats said Wednesday. “And I think the way the culture is in college basketball right now, you’re gonna see a little bit more of that where guys want to make sure that they’re in the best spot for their future.
“And I’m not … ideally he wouldn’t have done it, you know, if I’m talking as a head coach for Alabama, but I wasn’t all that disappointed you know we just, we had to convince him that Alabama was the best spot for him to prepare himself to go play in the NBA.”
Shackelford joins a squad that will rely on him, freshman JD Davison and Jahvon Quinerly to man the backcourt.
Even after losing Herb Jones, John Petty Jr. and Josh Primo to the NBA this offseason, the Tide should be one of the top teams in the SEC.
