The Alabama Crimson Tide have a battle for the starting punting job this fall.

One of the players competing for the role is 6-6 Australian James Burnip. When discussing Burnip’s performance during Saturday’s scrimmage, coach Nick Saban delivered a great quip.

Via AL.com, Saban said Burnip isn’t exactly playing football when he steps on the field to punt:

The 6-foot-6, 216-pound Burnip is not just a converted rugby player, Saban said while noting “he has punted a football before.”

“And really, we’re not asking him to play football,” Saban said. “We’re asking him to punt it. And he did a pretty good job of that today. And I’m sure that being a young guy as he gets more comfortable, more experienced and more confident, he’ll even do better probably from a consistency standpoint.”

Saban isn’t going to get much love from the “punters are people, too” crowd after those comments.

At least it sounds like Saban thinks he’s punting the ball well thus far during camp.
