Nick Saban held an interview with FOX Sports during halftime of the Purdue-Michigan Big Ten Championship Game, and was asked by Reggie Bush about College Football Playoff expansion.

Saban recalled that he said at the advent of the 4-team Playoff that bowl games would become relatively insignificant.

“They kind of have, and I think that’s a shame because I think that was one of the great traditions of college football,” Saban said. “Players could get a lot of positive self-gratification for playing in a nice bowl game, and so could their fans. So if that’s the case, we might as well expand the Playoffs to 12 teams so at this time of the year we’d have 20 to 25 teams still vying for positions to get in. There’d be a lot more interest. I think it’d be of interest to the fans.”

Saban admitted that he’s not sure of the best way to implement a 12-team Playoff, but he supports it because, “bowl games aren’t what they used to be.”
