Nick Saban did not hold back when asked about the new early signing period that is coming up next week.

In his press conference Friday, Saban was asked how he felt about the new signing period, and he made it clear that he is not a fan in the first year of its existence. Alabama beat reporter Alex Byington shared video of Saban’s press conference where he pointed to the timing in December making the period more stressful for players and coaches across the board.

Additionally, teams competing in the postseason are facing an even bigger time crunch:

“I didn’t like it when we did it, I don’t like it now,” said Saban. “I don’t think it’s in the players’ best interest. I don’t see how it benefits anybody. It’s really stressful for everyone. We’re all trying to get ready for bowl games and Playoff games. And we have a signing date right in the middle of when we are going to be practicing for a Playoff game.”

Saban also sees two different scenarios playing out on the recruiting trail with coaches pressuring players in multiple ways:

“I think two things happen: I see more players getting pressured by some schools to sign early,” Saban explained, “So that they don’t get an opportunity by a bigger school later, which I don’t think is in the players’ best interest. Then, other guys are trying to make a decision about signing early and they have all these new coaches and assistant coaches bum-rushing them to get a chance.”

In the end, Saban said he doesn’t like it and that no coach he has talked to likes it either:

“Maybe I shouldn’t be speaking like this,” Saban said, “But I have not talked to a coach who is happy with it. Not one.”
