Nick Saban enjoys discussing big-picture ideas around college football.

This time, he sat down with Joel Klatt on FOX Sports and talked about choosing the College Football Playoff field. Saban wondered if the teams with the most wins are truly the best in a given season.

“When they told me we’d be favored against 3 of the 4 teams that got in the Playoff, I’m like, ‘Well, why aren’t we in the Playoff,'” Saban said.

Saban opened up about why he’s still coaching after all of the championship success after Klatt recalled that Saban told him last season that the “chase is greater than the capture.”

“That’s the process of what you go through to try to build a team, the process of what you try to do to build individuals to have a culture that they need to be the best version of themselves,” Saban said. “In terms of whether personal, academic or athletic. You view a game, that’s what you see, that’s what you cover and that’s part of it. But the work ethic, the discipline, the pride and performance. All the things that go into trying to help them to have the best version of themselves carry over into life as well. So that’s the part that I enjoy.”

Saban said it’s like climbing a mountain because it’s an individual challenge, but also a collective challenge with the team.
