Last week it was reported by FOX Sports that Alabama offensive analyst Mike Locksley would be promoted to co-offensive coordinator alongside Steve Sarkisian for the 2017 season.

However, on Tuesday, coach Nick Saban was evasive when asked about Locksley’s role with the team moving forward.

“Mike Locksley’s a coach on our staff right now, and we’re really happy to have him,” Saban said while watching players during Senior Bowl practice, per 247Sports. “When we get all the changes we’re going to make on the staff worked out, we’ll make an announcement about who’s going to coach what or where.”

This isn’t shocking, as Saban hasn’t necessarily been the easiest person to extract information from in the past — even in situations much like these, where the pieces just seem to fit perfectly.

Locksley, who we can at this point assume will indeed become the Crimson Tide’s next co-offensive coordinator, is a very strong hire and should help the potentially explosive (albeit, youthful) offense continue to make strides entering next season.

As Illinois’ OC — a position he held from 2005-08 — the Fighting Illi led the Big Ten in rushing in 2006 and 2007 and then led the conference in passing in 2008. His 2013 unit with Maryland produced over 5,000 yards of total offense for only the fourth time in program history, accounting for 3,231 yards passing (third most all-time).

This is a resume that would surely fit the new title. In 2016, Alabama finished as a top-15 scoring unit, but struggled with consistency at times (particularly down the stretch) and averaged just 210.3 passing yards per game, which ranked 87th in the nation.

Paired with Sarkisian, who has a history of developing quarterbacks, the sky is the limit for the future of the Alabama offense. Together, the two could help turn rising sophomore Jalen Hurts into one of the top quarterbacks in the country, while reestablishing a dangerously deep backfield as “Running Back U” in a matter of an offseason.

But for now, mum’s the word.
