The strength of the Alabama program means that a number of players have made the jump to the NFL and enjoyed successful careers.

The Tide had 6 players selected in the 1st round of the 2021 NFL Draft, tied for a record from 1 school with Miami set in 2004. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, the 5th overall pick, is reunited with Tua Tagovailoa as both play for the Dolphins, while Patrick Surtain II, the 9th overall selection, is with the Broncos. Meanwhile, DeVonta Smith was taken 10th overall by the Eagles, where he’ll once again catch passes from Jalen Hurts.

Speaking of Tagovailoa, he’ll look to outduel his former teammate, New England rookie Mac Jones, on Sunday as the Dolphins visit the Patriots in Week 1. Nick Saban mentioned the Tagovailoa-Jones matchup, stating that while he doesn’t have time to watch many Sunday afternoon games following college football Saturdays, he’ll be wishing both the best.

“We’re rooting for both guys,” Saban said, according to AL.com’s Mike Rodak. “I hope both of them play extremely well. They’re very capable. Tua obviously, sort of had his year last year to play and develop and learn and grow. Mac is certainly in that situation now.”

In all, 70 former Alabama players will suit up for NFL teams for Week 1.

“I think we text all 70 players in the NFL and let them know that our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we wish them good luck,” Saban said. “But we have so many players in the NFL [that] I don’t really reach out individually.”
