Paul Finebaum said he believes the best news about the Alabama baseball program is that whatever betting scandal allegedly happened at Alabama appears to be limited to former coach Brad Bohannon, who was fired last week.

The larger concern is the overall image and perception of the Alabama athletics department, Finebaum said.

“This athletics department looks very bad right now, there’s a very dark cloud hovering over it and people for the first time are questioning the leadership of the person in charge, Greg Byrne,” Finebaum said on WJOX in Birmingham, Alabama and the “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” show. “Until recently, he was considered among the top people in that space.”

Finebaum referred to the Brandon Miller situation during the basketball season, and now this baseball situation, and noted that serious questions are being asked. Greg McElroy pointed out that it’s difficult to hold Byrne accountable for the apparent betting issue, and Finebaum noted that bad hires happen all the time.

“Overall there just seems to be a lot of questions,” Finebaum said. “I know some of it sounds extreme because this is someone, by all accounts, has done a very good job and is very popular. But these things change quickly and all I’m saying is I think we need to hear from Greg Byrne. We need a full accounting from him at some point, not specifically about the Bohannan situation because that clearly is something that is in another venue. But Alabama fans and I think people around this program want to feel good about their program and right now they don’t.”
