Can Alabama make a deep run in the playoffs? Can Alabama even secure a spot in the 12-team field?
Paul Finebaum weighed in on the Crimson Tide’s outlook on Monday following their dominant win over Mizzou Saturday evening, answering those questions in the process.
The SEC analyst mentioned that there is a very fine line from the top teams in the SEC. Alabama’s win over Georgia means they’ll still have a shot at the 12-team field despite losing to Vanderbilt and Tennessee earlier this season.
“I do now, and I know what I said a week ago… It doesn’t take much. There’s a fine line from the top teams, and obviously Alabama started the season as one of the elite teams. There’s a very fine line.”
Their top obstacle? Week 11 at LSU. Finebaum circled Week 11 as a measuring stick for the Crimson Tide, to see if they’ve really moved on after their loss to the Volunteers.
“I don’t know why anyone who follows Alabama really should act like this is something that they’ve never encountered,” Finebaum continued. “The last 3 seasons have been just like this. 2 years ago, after the Tennessee loss, it was a matter of survival, can Alabama run the table? They didn’t, they lost obviously to LSU in overtime, and last year from the 2nd week of the season, Alabama was holding on. I think that’s one reason why this program at Alabama is in good shape… We’ll find out in a week and a half if they survived last weekend.”
The Crimson Tide of course get a bye this coming weekend before facing the Tigers in Death Valley. LSU is in a similar boat and will be fighting for a spot in the playoff as well, also unable to take another loss. The Tigers fell to Texas A&M in College Station this past weekend, falling to 6-2 in the process.
