The Tua Tagovailao Show was as advertised Saturday — breaktaking. But it included a surprise guest: Jalen Hurts.

Together, the two Alabama quarterbacks looked as unstoppable as ever, combining for 6 TD passes and 321 yards.

Tagovailoa, making his first career home start, misfired on his first throw and then hit Jerry Jeudy for a 58-yard touchdown on his next. And just like that, a game that was never meant to be in doubt never was.

Tagovailoa’s first two completions went for touchdowns. He finished with a career-high 4, Hurts added 2 and Saivion Smith added a pick-six as No. 1 Alabama overwhelmed Arkansas State 57-7 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Even in a blowout, Saturday’s glorified scrimmage revealed at least three things of note:

1. Alabama is back to its 2016 ways — already scoring three non-offensive touchdowns while allowing just three touchdowns through two games.

2. Alabama has a serious issue to resolve at kicker. Austin Jones was 1-of-3 on PATs, then replaced by Joseph Bulovas, who not only made his PATs but added a 39-yard field goal.

3. A quarterback race that was all but decided last January finally has a crystalized pecking order, but there was suspense before kickoff as to Hurts’ role.

Would he play? Would he sit and help preserve his redshirt?

Hurts played — his second of the 4-game cap to keep a redshirt — which was a complete 180 from Friday reports that Hurts wanted to redshirt and would only play in an emergency. Saturday hardly qualified as a 5-minute sports physical, much less an emergency.

The difference in Alabama’s game plan was as glaring as the two quarterbacks’ skill sets. Longtime Bama fans might have had to check the television a couple of times to make sure they had the correct channel.

Tagovailoa threw 3 TD passes before the first quarter ended. The program record was 5, set by Gary Hollingsworth in 1989.

When Hurts entered, Alabama led 19-0 (thanks to two missed extra points), Alabama reverted to its running ways. Damien Harris ripped off a long run. Then another. The Tide were threatening when Hurts leaped one defender but fumbled when he was crushed by another. Arkansas State recovered at its 1-yard line.

The turnover merely delayed the inevitable. The Tide forced a 3-and-out, and the offense went back to work, with Hurts in the gun.

After finding DeVonta Smith for a 30-yard catch-and-run, Hurts hit Irv Smith on a 10-yard seam route for his first touchdown throw of the season.

This time, the Tide even added the extra point to make it 26-0.

After forcing another 3-and-out — Alabama allowed just eight first downs in the opening half — Hurts directed his touchdown drive.

He took another shot, too, though this time it was while delivering a 7-yard TD pass to Jeudy.

Alabama scored 5 touchdowns on its first 7 drives — and all 5 were touchdown passes.

After the play, Hurts and Tagovailoa celebrated with a custom greeting and hug.

The pace slowed in the second half, though the Tide still hit 50 when Tagovailoa ripped a 14-yard throw to Derek Kief, who toe-tapped for a touchdown.

If you are a rival hoping this quarterback situation was going to rip apart the locker room and derail Alabama’s championship aspirations, it was further proof that Alabama’s going to be OK.
