Former Alabama linebacker Mack Wilson has had a rough start to his second preseason camp with the Cleveland Browns. On the camp’s first day in pads, Wilson knocked out Nick Chubb with a horsecollar tackle that resulted in a concussion for the running back. Tuesday, Wilson had to be carted off the field after suffering a leg injury. It is now being reported that Wilson could miss the 2020 NFL season.
Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that Brown suffered a “significantly-hyperextended left knee” and will see another doctor to find out if he needs surgery. If Wilson has surgery, his season is likely over. Wilson will miss time, but if he does not have surgery, he could return to action during the season.
Cabot details that Wilson’s injury happened during a 7-on-7 drill. Wilson, who was demoted to the second team for the hit on Chubb, broke up a pass and then fell to the ground, tossing his helmet and “yelling out in pain.” Wilson reportedly needed assistance to get to the sideline. Team doctors called for the cart after examining his knee.
In his rookie season, Wilson recorded 82 tackles, including 4 for loss, an interception, a forced fumble. Wilson made 14 starts for the Browns after being selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
