RJ Young is out with his break down of the Alabama quarterback competition between Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner.

Young points out that this is interesting because of the uniqueness of an open QB competition at Alabama for the first time since 2016.

“That’s not exactly how Nick Saban likes to do this, he likes having the quarterback position settled by the spring,” Young said. “It was very clear that come 2021, everybody knew that Bryce Young was going to be the guy come the end of the spring.”

Young sees this as a very even competition because Milroe and Buchner offer the same set of skills.

“Both are lethal in the open field, both have issues throwing the ball to teams that don’t wear their jersey,” he said. “Both have issues putting the ball on the floor.”

Buchner is also somewhat injury-prone, Young said.

Young sees Simpson as more of a “polished passer,” and he could be the guy to hit on deep play-action passes.

“I think they’ve got good options there, I’m just interested,” he said. “I think it’s going to be Milroe,” but added that the one game he started last year was a near disaster because of Milroe’s turnovers.
