Saivion Smith suffered a serious injury in the Detroit Lions game on Sunday against the New England Patriots.
The former Alabama defensive back suffered an apparent neck injury with another player, Hunter Henry, and he was loaded on a stretcher into an ambulance early in the game. This was the 10th NFL game for Smith, who earlier played for the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.
Smith joined the Lions to start this season after he made it to the NFL last season.
Smith started the season on the Lions’ practice squad even after a solid training camp.
Lions CB Saivion Smith is being taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury.

Smith has had a busy football career, as he played at LSU and Mississippi Gulf Coast before Alabama. He then played in the XFL and in various roster situations, Smith appeared with the Jaguars, Cowboys, Seahawks, Broncos and 49ers.
The Lions claimed Smith off waivers in December, then released him several weeks later, only to immediately re-sign him to the practice squad. Smith signed a reserves/future contract after the season ended, the Detroit Free Press reported.
