Though Tua Tagovailoa fell just short of winning the Heisman Trophy over the weekend, he took home another national award Monday.

Sporting News recognized Alabama’s quarterback as its 2018 Player of the Year, giving Tagovailoa another accolade following his standout sophomore season. Last week, he garnered the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards — both for national player of the year — only to watch as Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray edged him out for the Heisman.

Murray also earned Associated Press Player of the Year and Davey O’Brien Award recognition as the nation’s top quarterback, indicating just how close he and Tagovailoa were this season.

But Sporting News appeared to favor Tagovailoa because of his season-long dominance, a streak of impressive showings that made him the Heisman favorite until his injury-riddled struggles against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. That opened to the door for Murray to claim the Heisman, but Sporting News still stuck with Tagovailoa.
