Believe it or not, turning down a scholarship offer from Alabama to come play quarterback isn’t so easy.

Let’s back that up for a second. Turning down a scholarship offer from Alabama to come play quarterback isn’t so easy…when you’re already set on going to Princeton.

That story was about 4-star Princeton commit Brevin White, who made national headlines for sticking with the Ivy League school instead of taking a last-minute offer from the Tide.

USA Today’s Paul Myerberg went in depth with White to find out just how difficult of a decision that was for him back in January. This excerpt detailed what that process was like when White took an official visit to Tuscaloosa:

He was hosted by sophomore Tua Tagovailoa, the hero of Alabama’s championship-game win against Georgia. He took note of the waterfall, the support system for academics, the facilities, even the new dining center currently in construction. On his first full night on campus, his mother attended a cocktail party at the Saban residence and saw Saban do the “wobble.” White watched Alabama take on Oklahoma in basketball.

He drew formations and plays for the Alabama coaching staff. They’d ask for his favorite play; he’d go up to the board and map it out. During a dinner hosted on the suite level of Bryant-Denny Stadium, White, a fan of country music, was walking past the 50-yard line when Sweet Home Alabama came on the loudspeakers. He got chills.

Overall, White said the visit “shattered” his sky-high expectations (seeing Saban do the wobble in person was probably pretty epic).

So what led to White’s decision? He told USA Today that it came down to checking pluses and minuses of each school. He said it helped that Dallas Cowboys coach and Princeton graduate Jason Garrett told him that if you’re good enough the NFL will find you.

Alabama, of course, wasn’t able to add a scholarship quarterback in its 2018 class. If White does become a national star at Princeton, many will look back on the gamble he took on himself.

Myerberg’s entire story is definitely worth a read.
