Already this season, there have been some incredible quarterback performances in the SEC, notably Florida’s Kyle Trask in both games and Mississippi State’s KJ Costello and his record-setting performance in Week 1.

But, when asked on Sunday morning’s SportsCenter which quarterback in the SEC has been the biggest surprise, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum had a different answer.

Finebaum noted Trask’s Heisman-level play, but added that Alabama QB Mac Jones has been incredible:

“It’s impossible to look past Kyle Trask because he’s been absolutely outstanding,” Finebaum said. “But to me, I’m a little more surprised and pleased with Mac Jones. Remember, he was the understudy to Tua (Tagovailoa) last year at Alabama, and when Tua went down, nobody thought Alabama would do very much.

“Mac Jones has played very well, and this year, he’s been almost perfect. And he’s got a 5-star quarterback behind him nipping at his heels in Bryce Young, who was the best quarterback in the country last year, right now has no path to the starting job. Mac Jones has been unbelievably good.”

Jones has proven more than capable of getting the ball in the hands of Alabama’s playmakers, like Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith and Najee Harris.

If he can continue to do that moving forward, the Crimson Tide appear to be on a direct path to the College Football Playoff.
