ARKANSAS
5 Biggest Takeaways: Momentum runs dry for Arkansas in season finale
Here are the five biggest takeaways from the Razorbacks’ 21-14 loss to No. 17 Missouri:
- Momentum cut short: Arkansas struggled on offense most of the afternoon, while the defense wore out midway through the fourth quarter. Missouri ran 83 plays, by far the most the Razorbacks have allowed this season, and it took a toll on the Hogs late in the game. Penalties and turnovers cost Arkansas on Friday afternoon, the Hogs had their chances to win the game, but failed to put it away.
- Learn to finish: The Razorbacks’ early-season issues arose again on Friday, failing to finish a game held firmly it their grasp. Questionable fourth down decisions, coupled with bad play-calling caused the latest meltdown. As Bret Bielema’s team looks to its bowl game and 2015, it must learn to finish close games. Friday’s loss marked the fourth time the Razorbacks have held a second-half lead, only to see that lead vanish.
- Stick to who you are: When the game was close late, Arkansas abandoned its identity. The Razorbacks had success running the football for three quarters, but forsook their run game in the fourth quarter and put the ball in the hands of banged up quarterback Brandon Allen. Do what you do, stick to your strength.
- More depth: Bielema alluded to it in his postgame remarks, but the Razorbacks are one full recruiting class away. Arkansas lacks depth on both sides of the football, and it showed against the Tigers. The defense finally showed signs of fatigue and Allen wasn’t healthy enough to give the Hogs the best chance to win. With added depth in 2015, Arkansas should be in a better position to compete down the stretch.
- Rest up, then bowl prep: Arkansas is still in line for a very strong finish to the 2014 campaign. A win in its bowl game would give the Razorbacks their seventh win, plus-four over a year ago. The Hogs need time to heal up, and must approach bowl prep with the correct attitude. This team has yet to experience postseason football, thus it will be key for Bielema to coach them the correct way.
