It was another tough week for Arkansas as the Razorbacks fell short for a third week in a row.

Last week the Razorbacks took LSU down to the wire and it seemed like they were ready to compete against some tough SEC teams, but they couldn’t get over the hump and lost to Texas A&M 34-22 as Arkansas dropped to 2-3 on the season. Now with more tough games on the Horizon, Arkansas’ season is looking doomed.

Maybe the Razorbacks are due for an upset win over Ole Miss or Alabama, but a performance like Saturday’s won’t cut it.

Player of the Week: Chris Paul Jr.

It’s hard to name a player of the week for a game that didn’t seem to yield many positives, but junior linebacker Chris Paul Jr. put together a solid performance in the midst of sloppy play all around.

Paul had 9 total tackles on the game, including 7 solo tackles and a tackle for loss. He was huge in preventing the game from getting more out of hand than it already was. It was a season high tackles from Paul and the kind of performance that Arkansas’ defense should look to and try to match moving forward.

Newcomer of the Week: Lorando Johnson

Larando Johnson made the transfer from Baylor to Arkansas this season and is slowly but surely winning Razorbacks fans over.

On Saturday, Johnson had as many touchdowns as the offense did.

In the 3rd quarter, as Arkansas’ offense continued to be stagnant, Johnson came up with a huge interception on the Aggies first drive out of halftime. He took the pick 20 yards and scored, making it a manageable 17-13 lead for Texas A&M.

Unfortunately for Arkansas, the Razorbacks couldn’t get much going after the huge pick 6 and a pair of Aggies’ touchdowns sealed the deal.

Biggest surprise: KJ Jefferson’s subpar performance

KJ Jefferson was completely dialed as the Razorbacks came just short of upsetting LSU last week, and it was fair to assume he would put together another veteran performance.

So what happened?

Jefferson had just 132 passing yards on a lackluster 9-for-17 passing and he found the endzone just once. Not only did he not help the team, he ended up hurting it with an interception that Texas A&M took to the house to take an 11-point lead and put the game further out of reach.

It was a complete flip from Jefferson’s 320-yard, 4-touchdown performance against LSU, and a game that he will look to avoid having a repeat of for the rest of the season. Jefferson has faced his fair share of bad games, and hopefully he’ll be able to overcome this one and get back on track.

Biggest concern: Run game

There hasn’t been a game where Arkansas’ run game has jumped off the page, and Saturday against Texas A&M was a new low.

The Razorbacks had just 42 yards out of the backfield, averaging a disappointing 1.1 yards per carry. Give Texas A&M’s defense some credit as the Aggies had 7 sacks on the night, which brought the total yards down, but the run game couldn’t get anything going.

One note is that Arkansas ran the ball just 21 times. The main running back used was Raheim Sanders, who had 11 carries and 34 yards, but Arkansas quarterback Jefferson used his legs 7 more times than that.

Arkansas seemed scared to use the run game against the Aggies solid defensive line, but avoiding the run completely will prevent it from ever getting hot. The Razorbacks need to better utilize the run game moving forward if they want to compete against the SEC.

Developing trend: Losing streak incoming?

The losses are piling up for Arkansas after the Razorbacks won their first 2 games and now things are looking scary for Arkansas fans.

Arkansas was given a chance to win in its last three games, but couldn’t get over the hump in any of those games. Now, they threaten to finish the season without an SEC win.

Arkansas has its 2 toughest games on deck with Ole Miss next week and Alabama the following week. Then, the Razorbacks have a game against Mississippi State that could go either way. After the bye week, they’ll see a Florida team that has looked dicey, but did get a big win over Tennessee already before playing an Auburn team that took Georgia down to the wire on Saturday.

That stretch of games could very well see Arkansas dealing with an 8-game losing streak.

The Razorbacks should get a win over FIU, but then they have to face a strong Missouri team to finish out the season. All that to say, it could be a long season ahead for Arkansas fans.

Key stat: 7 sacks

Texas A&M brought down KJ Jefferson 7 times on Saturday night. The Razorbacks offensive line has to get better at protecting their quarterback.

First impression about Week 6: Arkansas needs a miracle

After Arkansas kept things close against LSU, most would probably have faith that the Razorbacks could pull of an upset in Oxford.

With the loss to Texas A&M and Ole Miss’ big win over LSU, things are not looking good for Arkansas.

If Arkansas got the win over Texas A&M and had some positive momentum, things could look better, but its Ole Miss that has the momentum, and the Rebels will be looking to cruise past the Razorbacks and continue their quest for an SEC Championship.
