Former Arkansas football player's girlfriend killed in tragic accident in Cleveland
A former Arkansas football player was involved in a tragic accident in Cleveland early Wednesday morning.
Petara Cordero, the girlfriend of former Razorbacks and current Browns defensive end Chris Smith, was struck by a car and killed on I-90, according to Andrew Gribble of ClevelandBrowns.com. Cordero was 26. The woman driving the other car told the police she had been drinking.
Smith and Cordero were pulled over on the side of the highway after their car had a tire malfunction, spun out and hit the median. Both got out of the car without any injuries, but Cordero was then hit by an oncoming vehicle. Police and paramedics arrived shortly after the incident.
Smith and Cordero had a daughter, Haven Harris Smith, four weeks ago.
“Words cannot describe the sorrow we feel for Chris following the loss of his girlfriend, Petara,” Browns co-owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. “Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do everything possible to offer them our support, comfort and any resources in this most difficult time.”
According to Gribble, Browns players were notified of the incident during a team meeting on Wednesday morning and head coach Freddie Kitchens visited Smith at his home.
Smith, who played at Arkansas from 2010-13, will have the opportunity to grieve and be excused from Browns team activities, if desired.
