Inside the Numbers: Arkansas' ability to pressure Bo Wallace key
Arkansas plays host to No. 8 Ole Miss this week, after securing that elusive first conference win under Bret Bielema last week. Can the Hogs ride the momentum?
We dig into the good and bad numbers of the Razorbacks’ showdown with Ole Miss.
THE GOOD
1: Arkansas got its first win in SEC play under second-year head coach Bret Bielema last week, and now have some momentum heading into a crucial matchup as the Hogs look to get bowl eligible. This is a team that has been close many times, and now that it’s gotten over the hump, can the Razorbacks run off a winning streak?
43: The percentage of third downs on which Ole Miss is converting. This continues to be a problem area for the Rebels, and after Arkansas’ defensive effort last week against LSU, the challenge doesn’t get any easier. The Hogs’ front seven is beginning to hit its stride, and getting off the field on third downs will be key to not giving Bo Wallace and company any extra chances.
232.9: The number of rushing yards per game Arkansas averages, good for fourth in the SEC. Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze admitted this week the Razorbacks aren’t the best matchup for his team with the power run game the Razorbacks present. The Rebels struggled with a physical run game last month at LSU, and Arkansas presents a three-headed monster that is as good as any in the country. Expect Jonathan Williams, Alex Collins and Korliss Marshall to get a lot of touches.
THE BAD
6.3: Ole Miss ranks sixth in the SEC with 6.3 yards per play. Arkansas cannot allow that kind of positive yardage on early downs; the Hogs must keep Ole Miss’ offense to short or negative yardage, putting the Rebels into 3rd-and-long situations.
17: The number of sacks registered by Arkansas this season, tied for 10th in the SEC. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is expected to return for Ole Miss this week for a makeshift offensive line, providing a bit more protection for Wallace. The Hogs’ ability to create pressure on Wallace and spend time in the backfield will be key. Speeding up the game for Wallace and flushing him out of the pocket can force him into bad decisions.
39.9: The number of yards Arkansas averages per punt. Sam Irwin-Hill had a few big punts last week against LSU, and needs another big day against Ole Miss. Field position will play a huge role in the game. Giving the Rebels a short field on offense will put Freeze in a much more manageable position with his play-calling. If the Hogs can pin Ole Miss back deep a few times, that will allow the front seven to pin its ears back.
