Jamario Bell has a unique set of skills on the football field, and according to his presser on Saturday, Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema will be using the rising sophomore in a totally new way this season.

Recruited as both a TE and a DE in 2015, Bell has played a little of each during his two seasons in Fayetteville – but not well enough to see the field just yet. Bielema hopes to change that this season, as he believes that a switch to the newly-created “Hog” position will best utilize his skills.

When asked about it earlier this offseason, Bielema explained that a Hog is an outside linebacker that’s more of a hybrid LB/DL. This new position is a function of a new 3-4 defense that has been implemented by first-year DC Paul Rhoads. It should make use of Bell’s high-level athleticism and give him a little more freedom than the standard DE role.

As for Bell, it’s a bit puzzling that he hasn’t seen a bigger role thus far with the Hogs. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Junction City, Ark. native was one of only seven four-star recruits to commit to Bielema in the 2015 cycle. Bell was ranked as the No. 219 overall player and the No. 13 strong-side DE in America, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Among the most versatile athletes in the class, Bell played both offense and defense in football, while also throwing it down on the basketball court.
