No prep? Urban Meyer appears to know little about Arkansas in confounding clip during speaking engagement
Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has traveled the country to take part in various speaking engagements since he stepped down as coach and became a broadcaster with Fox Sports.
But during a recent stop in Arkansas at the Little Rock Touchdown Club, Meyer left observers confused about how much he knew about the Razorbacks program.
“Coaches care about one thing, winning,” he said. “How do you win? You have to recruit. You have to be the best of the best of the best, but if you can’t recruit, you can be Canoe and it’s not going to happen for you.”
Meyer reiterated that college football isn’t the NFL, so it’s important to re-stock your roster all the time. Yet he wasn’t sure who the current coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks is this season.
“It’s Chad Morris, right?,” he said. “I think that’s Chad Morris’ challenge. But obviously (Bobby) Petrino got it going, but it’s not been, this to me is a 10-win program. This to me, once again, the Arkansas that I remember, that I know. Are you kidding me? It’s Arkansas. But I don’t know the challenges. So Arkansas is now playing South Carolina, Gainesville, they’re playing teams over there as opposed to teams here. I never talked to Chad about it, I never talked to anybody about it, that’s just my opinion.”
It’s unclear what point Meyer tried to make with that last point as South Carolina and Florida are not on the schedule this season. Arkansas hasn’t played South Carolina since 2017, and Florida in 2016.
The last 10-win season for the Razorbacks was 2011 under Petrino as he went 10-3 and 11-2 in 2010 and 2011. Before that, it was 2006 under Houston Nutt, a 10-4 mark.

You’d think a guy who was supposedly teaching a leadership class would know how to be prepared for something like this.
Alcoholism is a serious problem…
I’ve said it here before. It’s as if Meyer has occasional issues with medications.
In the words of Rick James: “Cocaine is a helluva drug”.
What kind of rambling jibberish was that? Sounds like Lou Holtz on ESPN just before they let him go.
I bet he cashed that check though.
In order for Arkansas to win 10 games, the Hogs would have to win 4 non conference games, beat Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri and the other SEC East team, plus two of the following.
Alabama, Auburn, Texas AM, LSU. How often do you believe the Hogs can do that. In reality, the Hogs should be able to win 7 or 8 consistently. But even then, that means they must win all 4 non conference games and 3 conference games for 7 wins and 4 for 8 wins. Knowing they probably can’t beat Alabama, Auburn, or LSU, the must win 3 of the 5 remaining games. Who can they consistently beat? My point is that in no way is Arkansas a 10 win team consistently. Neither is Texas AM.
Unfortunately you’re probably correct. Really the only way for it to happen is for Arkansas to hire a great coach and recruiter, and for Bama and LSU to return to the days of hiring boobs like Dinardo or Mike Dubose.
In no manner are my Razorbacks a consistent ten win team, especially working with Chad Morris, who has never beaten a P5 school.
He has been successful at Florida and Ohio State.
Nobody had ever heard of either before he arrived, at least that’s what he thinks.
If you wants to prove he can coach, come on over to Kentucky and win an average of 10 games.
Then, you can say you’re the best we’ve had since ‘our version of Stoops’. Wait, Stoops won 10 once.
Well, if he wants a challenge, come to Lexington.
