5 takeaways from Week 2 of Auburn's fall camp
Auburn’s 2016 season opener at home against Clemson is just 19 days away. And the Tigers have only 12 practices left to prepare for Deshaun Watson & Co.
Here are five takeaways from Week 2 of Auburn’s fall camp.
1. Daniel Thomas is “showing sparks”
So writes the Montgomery Advertiser, which says the three-star safety prospect is in the running not only to make the active roster against Clemson, but also to be in the defensive back rotation for the season opener.
“We scrimmaged and he went into the stadium for the first time, and it was not too big for him,” new Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said on Thursday. “I use that as an example, but it’s kind of what we’re looking for in those young guys that have not played a whole lot is that when they get into those situations, particularly over at the stadium, it’s not too big for him.”
2. Rhett Lashlee: Eli Stove has “caught our attention”
That’s an observation from Auburn’s offensive coordinator, who recently spoke to 247Sports.com about the true freshman wide receiver.
“He’s done some really good things that says, ‘We need to keep working with this guy. He needs to be able to help us this year’ … He’s done enough that says, ‘Hey, he’s going to be ready to help us.’ In what capacity? I don’t know. But we’re going to keep pushing him, and he’s got a bright future.”
3. Auburn is trying to exceed expectations minus its top tailback
That’s according to the Associated Press, which quotes a confident Gus Malzahn, who seems to have more than moved on since the dismissal of Jovon Robinson from the program earlier this month.
“We’ve been one of the better rushing teams in our league, I guess, for six years, and we’ll continue to be that,” Malzahn said.
4. Kodi Burns is guiding receiver Jason Smith through position changes
Like Smith, Burns — Auburn’s new wide receivers coach — made the transition from quarterback to wideout, and he recently told AL.com how he’s helping the junior with the switch.
“Jason Smith has done a great job in fall camp so far,” Burns said. “I’ve been really impressed with him … He’s changed everything that he’s doing. He looks quicker. He understands the offense a little bit better. He’s more comfortable in his role, and I think that he realizes that he feels a sense of urgency that, ‘Hey, I want to be that guy. I want to be that big-play guy.’ So hopefully we can bring him along and he can help us out as well.”
5. “Anything is possible” in ongoing Auburn quarterback battle
That’s what Lashlee recently told The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, which obviously doesn’t clarify who might start against Clemson, but he apparently hasn’t ruled out using multiple QBs against the defending ACC champs.
“I don’t know if we’ve done that before,” Lashlee said. “It’s not ideal, but if that’s what’s best for our team and those three guys, that’s what we’ll do.”
“Those three guys” are returnees Jeremy Johnson and Sean White, plus incoming recruit John Franklin III.
“It’s always possible,” Lashlee added. “It’s not common, but it’s been done before. We’ll just kind of see where it leads. They’ve got a chip on their shoulder. They know what’s out there.”
