Auburn defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff is temporarily stepping away from an on-field role because of a personal matter, according to 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello.

Special teams coach Tanner Burns will fill the void during this period of time. McGriff remains at work daily with the program, per Marcello. Zac Etheridge will remain as the coach of Auburn’s safeties, yet he also has history with being a cornerbacks coach.

McGriff is currently in his 3rd stint with Auburn since returning as a member of Hugh Freeze’s 1st-year coaching staff. McGriff formally was an assistant coach at Auburn in 2016 and 2019-20.

Auburn (3-3, 0-3) is coming off a 48-18 loss at LSU in which they totaled 293 yards. Quarterback Payton Thorne went 12-for-23 with 102 yards. Auburn’s offense only converted 3 of its 12 attempts on 3rd down. Auburn’s defense surrendered 563 total yards, including 238 on the ground.

Next up for Auburn is a home matchup vs. No. 13 Ole Miss (5-1, 2-1). Ole Miss is coming off a bye week and most recently edged Arkansas 27-20. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was rumored to be interested in Auburn before signing an extension.

Auburn leads the all-time series 35-11 against Ole Miss. Ole Miss defeated Auburn 48-34 last season in Oxford to snap a 6-game losing streak against the Tigers.

Ole Miss at Auburn is slated for a 7 p.m. EST kickoff on Saturday (ESPN).
